2nd anonymous - your right, although I don't know if it would be classified as another planet. Most popular theory is a large object with an iron core hit earth X-zillion years ago. The iron cores of both object joined together and stayed with the earth while the second object rebounded, may have impacted again before settling into an orbit around the earth.
Shortly thereafter, it turned into green cheese......
