Part of the difference is due to the distortion of the particular map projection.
It looks like Alaska is about 1/3 the size of the 48 states, but it is really "only" 663,267 square miles, compared to 3,119,686 square miles for the 48 contiguous states plus the District of Columbia. That's a little more than 1/5 the size.
